Charter plc was previously the ultimate holding company of a group of companies which owned two international engineering businesses, one focused on welding, cutting and automation (ESAB), and the other on air and gas handling (Howden). Under proposals implemented on 22 October 2008, holders of Charter plc ordinary shares became holders of Charter International plc ordinary shares and Charter plc became a wholly owned subsidiary of Charter International plc and has been re-registered as Charter Limited.
